Lenny Abrahamson and Element Pictures are set to adapt Sally Rooney's Booker-nominated novel 'Normal People' for BBC Three.
In a statement released today, Abrahamson praised Rooney as "a writer of the highest calibre and in ‘Normal People’ she captures the ebb and flow of intimacy and desire with extraordinary skill," whilst Element Pictures chief Ed Guiney called 'Normal People' "a beautifully written, utterly beguiling exploration of an incredibly intense love story, the subtlety and specificity of which is breathtaking."
Rooney's second novel, 'Normal People', follows an on-off relationship between Marianne and Connell over the course of the years through school, college and different versions of themselves along the way. Rooney, whose debut novel 'Conversation With Friends' won huge acclaim on its release eighteen months ago, will pen the screenplay for the television series.
"I feel very privileged to be working with such an extraordinary team on the adaptation of 'Normal People'," said Rooney. "I’m looking forward to the challenge of working in a new form, and of thinking about these characters and their lives in new ways."
The series will debut on BBC Three, although no casting or air date has been confirmed as of yet.
