If there's one US TV show that knows how to court controversy then it has to be Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy. From cancellation to thousands of letters of complaint from the viewing public, there's nothing this show hasn't handled at this stage, so imagine our surprise when we heard Downton Abbey's own Lady Mary would be heading off to Quahog. What would granny say?

British actress Michelle Dockery has proved, on more than one occasion, that she's definitely game for a laugh, so we're actually rather excited to hear that she's signed on to appear in the next season of Family Guy. Love it or loathe it, you have to admit that the show knows how to get people talking. If it's good enough for Patrick Stewart and Adam West then it's good enough for Lady Mary.

As per Entertainment Weekly, Michelle will be voicing a character in one of the show's famous cutaway gags. She'll be playing (shock, horror) a British aristocrat in a piece on the Griffin family TV. Sounds great and all, but we'd kind of love to see her playing other characters on d'telly now too: If you've seen her in anything else, you'll know she's a pretty wonderful actress.

Seems they're really growing to love the Crawleys across the Atlantic though, with Downton creeping into almost every element of pop culture now. Sure didn't our own Allen Leech even find himself in a Marvel movie of late? We're going to go out on a limb and say the Irish charm had something to do with that one...

Downton Abbey returns to ITV in the autumn, and we'll keep you posted as soon as we hear of an air date for Michelle's episode of Family Guy.
