Johnny Briggs, best known for his role as Mike Baldwin on 'Coronation Street', has died at the age of 85, following a long illness.

ITV and the actor's family confirmed the news this morning, stating that the actor "passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side."

Johnny Briggs began starring in 'Coronation Street' in 1976, where his relationship with Deirdre Barlow and rivalry with Ken Barlow played a role in major storylines. In 2006, Briggs left the soap after appearing in the series for four decades. All told, the actor appeared in 2,349 episodes.

As well as 'Coronation Street', Briggs also starred in a number of well-known British TV shows such as 'The Saint' opposite Roger Moore, 'The Persuaders' opposite Tony Curtis and Moore again, and several 'Carry On' movies, including 'Carry On Behind' and 'Carry On Up The Khyber'.

Briggs is survived by his children and grandchildren.
