It's been a long time since we've seen Irish actor Jack Gleeson on our TV screens - although considering his last role was one of the most odious characters even seen on television, that's not such a bad thing.

Gleeson, of course, is best known for his role as Joffrey Baratheon in 'Game of Thrones' - the boy king who had evil running through his veins and who ultimately met a gruesome end after he was poisoned.

After appearing in the HBO series, the Cork-born Gleeson decided to take a step back from acting although he did appear in some theatre and the odd big screen role, including BBC miniseries 'Out of Her Mind' in 2020, and he also has a role in upcoming Irish thriller film 'In the Land of Saints and Sinners' with Liam Neeson and Kerry Condon.

He said at the time: "I’d like to be an academic, a philosophy lecturer if possible. I’d do a Masters in Ancient Hebrew maybe, and a PhD hopefully, if I get in. The thing about that level of acting is that it is very financially rewarding but for me it is a balancing act."

However, his next big series will be 'The Famous Five', the BBC co-production of Enid Blyton's novels, which is being directed by 'Drive' helmer Nicolas Winding Refn.

Gleeson - who got married last year - will play a character called Wentworth and the first photos from the set reveal a very different look for him.

Gone are the blonde tresses and boyish look, now replaced by a dark-haired mullet and moustache:

By the looks of the press photo, it looks like Wentworth may well be a villain - something Gleeson is well accustomed to playing.

The series will air on the BBC later this year.
