Albert Square is getting an Irish resident soon with the addition of a bona fide Hollywood star, (well, he was at one point) and from Dublin no less, as Patrick Bergin joins the cast.

The 66-year-old actor previously starred in Sleeping with the Enemy alongside Julia Roberts as well as Patriot Games and Robin Hood. Bergin, who was most recently seen in TV3's Red Rock, will take on the role of Aidan Joseph Patrick Maguire (yes, the most Irish name in the world) – an old friend of Phil Mitchell’s from prison.

Apparently, he is set to be part of a "truly explosive storyline" over the Christmas with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and Mick Carter (Danny Dyer). Speaking about his new role, Patrick said: "I am delighted to be joining EastEnders as I have watched and admired it since the days of Dirty Den.

"It is an iconic show that has the ability to shape the way people think, whilst also telling big explosive stories that keep the audience gripped. I am really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for Aidan as it's bound to be dramatic."

EastEnders' Creative Director John Yorke added: "EastEnders deserves the very best and in Patrick we are absolutely privileged to have a truly great actor join the show.

"It's a huge honour to have him on board, where he'll be working hand in hand with Phil Mitchell and Mick Carter to carry a truly explosive storyline for Christmas and New Year. We can't wait to get started."

Patrick will begin filming this month and will be on screen towards the end of the year.
