'Doctor Who' fans (and non-fans, let's be honest) were whipped up into a frenzy this week when the actor became attached to the sci-fi franchise.

Unfortunately, according to the actor in question, it was all just one big rumour. Hugh Grant has dismissed any involvement in the 'Doctor Who' series, dashing hopes of him taking over as the famed time-traveller.

News broke on Monday that the 61-year-old 'Notting Hill' and 'Muy Best Friend's Wedding' star was attached to take over from current doctor, Jodie Whittaker, later this year. Should the discussions be true, Grant would be the 14th actor to take on the famed sci-fi role.

However, Grant took to social media late last night to knock back any potential involvement in the series. Sharing the article from The Guardian on Twitter, he wrote: "Nothing against Dr W but I’m not. No idea where the story came from."

The other rumour attached to Hugh Grant and 'Doctor Who' from this week is that returning writer and producer Russell T. Davies is planning a "Marvel-type makeover" for the franchise. This would see other characters appear in their own spin-offs or limited series; time will tell if any of the gossips come to fruition.

Whittaker, who was the very first female Doctor in the series which has been going since 1963, will bow out of the franchise this year after three seasons as the titular character.

Who the fourteenth Doctor will be still remains a mystery, unfortunately.
