Back in the day Glenroe was one of the most watched shows on Irish television and the most talked about too. An entire nation was glued to the affairs and scandals of this sleepy country village of a Sunday night, while as kids we generally watched as it meant our parents completely forgot about bedtime... until those credits rolled of course.

Writer and actor Kate Thompson played the devious Terry Killeen on the show for many a year, and was most famous for that schteamy affair with married man Dick Moran. Safe to say, she was not well-liked by the public, and it seems people didn't try very hard to disguise it.

In an interview with The Herald, Thompson said; "I remember walking into a studio one day to do a voice over and the receptionist looked up and she said 'Oh! My mum hates you!'" she tells me.

"It's a horrible thing because it kind of chips away at you. You see people at the checkout in the supermarket giving you dirty looks. I remember getting handwritten death threats. It was not pleasant.

"People were always writing bad-girl roles for me and I could never understand why, because I always thought I was quite a nice person. I think I must have 'bitchy resting face' or something,' she joked.

Seriously though, handwritten death threats? At least they have to be a 140 characters or less these days.
