George RR Martin is a rather busy man these days, what with his book series being turned into a whopping great TV show and all, but he's just found time to drop a rather big bombshell about what's to come for the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms in the next 'Song of Fire and Ice' book series.

Martin was speaking to SFX about his desire to write more episodes of the hit TV series, when he revealed his plans to cull a fair few characters in the not too distant future. Guess they weren't lying when they said it was coming for everyone and everything in those Season 3 promos after all... We're kind of liking this Joss Whedon-like 'kill all the decent characters that everybody grows to love' streak.

"There's part of me that would like to be more involved with the television series - to write three or four scripts each season instead of just one," he explained. "But I still have two gigantic books to write and I can't possibly take off time to do that. So the books are my babies" the author explained. We know a fair few fans of the novels who'll be delighted to hear that now, though whether or not they'll be overjoyed to hear what he had to say next is another matter.

"It's my intention to cut down the number [of characters], so be afraid, be very afraid - your favourite may not survive the next book!" he revealed. We know who we'd love to see popping their clogs, but we'll keep schtum for fear that we'll jinx things, or spoil the whole thing for those of you who aren't that far ahead yet. But hey, it's TV, we're sure someone he's killed off will rise from the shower ala Bobby from Dallas. A rather errr, Medieval looking shower, we suppose.

Speaking of Game of Thrones, we caught the first episode of Season 3 last night at an exclusive Sky Atlantic preview screening. We won't spoil it for you, but we will say it was pretty awesome, and only complaint was that it didn't go on for longer!

Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic on Monday April 1st at 9pm.
