We have yet to watch the closing credits on season six of Game of Thrones, but already HBO are making plans for season eight, which is potentially the last ever.

The main stars are set to earn up to $500,000 per episode for seasons seven and eight, sources told The Hollywood Reporter, making them among the highest-paid actors on cable TV.

These leads include Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister).

These five stars may have been locked into contracts, but that still doesn't mean they'll survive, while season eight has also yet to be officially commissioned, although its pretty much a given.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have hinted that season eight will mark the final season of the show as they are now "approaching the finish line" and are "looking at somewhere between 70 and 75 hours before the credits roll for the last time." (There will have been 60 hours shown at the end of season six.)

The contracts of Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) have not yet been completed but their last deal in 2014 saw them land some hefty pay rises for season seven too.

HBO declined to comment on the salary bumps.
