He has achieved incredible success throughout his career, but there has been one rare accolade that has eluded Elton John - until last night, that is.

The English musician became an EGOT last night - a winner of an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony - by winning the award for Best Variety Special Live at last night's Emmy Awards.

Scooping the Emmy for his 'Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium' special, the 76-year-old became only the 19th person ever to achieve renowned EGOT status.

However, the 'Rocket Man' singer was not at the ceremony to accept the award, which was accepted on his behalf by his husband David Furnish and producer Ben Winston. Winston said: "I am not Elton John - sadly, he had a knee op. He’s absolutely fine, but wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award.

“We knew this show would be historic, because it was going to be Elton’s last ever show in North America on tour. We knew it would be historic because it was Disney’s first live global stream. We didn’t know it would be historic because it was going to win a man, who has created the soundtrack to our lives, he’s done so much great for society, who is all of our hero. We didn’t know it would win him an EGOT."

Other people who have achieved EGOTs include Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mel Brooks and Audrey Hepburn.

John did, however, take to Instagram to celebrate the award, saying that he was "honoured to have joined the hallowed ranks of EGOT winners, here’s to the joy of music and the magic it brings to our lives!"

Meanwhile, 'The Bear' and 'Succession' won big at the Emmys, winning Best Comedy and Best Drama respectively, as well as numerous writing, directing and acting awards.

Netflix series 'Beef' also won several awards, with lead actress Ali Wong making history as the first Asian woman to win the 'Lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie' category.
