We were all very sad to hear of Larry Hagman's passing late last year, particularly when he'd only just been lighting up our screens again as JR Ewing. Alas, the show must go on and the Dallas execs have said that there was no other option but to give JR a fitting send off by murdering him all over again.

"JR was such a delicious and iconic character that we couldn't just kill him by natural circumstances" showrunner Cynthia Cidre told TV Guide. "It had to be bigger than that, and more fun than that, and at the same time, it has to be emotional and a proper goodbye to both JR Ewing and Larry Hagman."

In scenes reflecting that iconic age in television history (even Maggie Simpson pulled a copycat effort), fans of Dallas will once again find themselves in the middle of a great big whodunnit. Some of the show's former stars will return for a great big send off some time around episode 8. TV Guide says the likes of Deborah Shelton (who played JR's mistress Mandy Winger) Cathy Podewell (who played JR's second wife Cally Ewing), Ted Shackelford (Gary Ewing), Steve Kanaly (Ray Krebbs) and Charlene Tilton (Lucy Ewing) set to return.

"A little bit of [the whodunnit mystery] will be revealed in episode eight" Cidre said, "and then we will take the rest of the season to reveal [the rest],

Dallas returns to TV screens in the US on January 28th.
