The BBC need look no further than the Emerald Isle when hunting for the next Time Lord, because Merlin star Colin Morgan is the perfect fit, according to Radio Times readers at least.

The Irish actor topped a poll carried out by RadioTimes.com (the online arm of the UK's answer to the RTE Guide), beating off the likes of worldwide phenomenon Benedict Cumberbatch, Thor and Avengers villain Tom Hiddleston and recent BAFTA winner Ben Whishaw (The Hour). It seems that the 27-year-old's stint on Merlin has made him a firm favourite in households across the water.

The BBC has yet to find a replacement for departing Time Lord Matt Smith, who announced that he was leaving the show after four years. At 26, Smith was the youngest ever actor cast in the role, so perhaps 27-year-old Colin is just the right age to follow in his footsteps.

We certainly could see the Armagh lad teaming up with Jenna Louise Coleman, who will remain with the show for at least another series as Clara Oswald, the mysterious Impossible Girl. Sure wouldn't it be great to see an Irish fella taking control of the Tardis?

Pay attention now BBC, you know the err, viewer, is always right.
