How superstar players such as Pelé and George Best made America fall in love with soccer in the 1970s, as an entertaining new game emerged, in contrast to English football, which was associated with crumbling stadiums, hooliganism and a grim atmosphere. The New York Cosmos signed Pelé on what was then the biggest contract in sporting history, while Best saw the USA as a chance to reinvent himself and the game. Riding this wave, the NASL boldly predicted global dominance by 1985 - but sadly it was not to be.
