These teams famously met in the opening match of the 2002 finals, when Senegal produced one of the great World Cup upsets by prevailing 1-0 against the then holders thanks to a goal by Papa Bouba Diop. Should the Senegalese prevail today it would not be a shock of quite the same magnitude, given they reached the last 16 in 2022 and initially won last year's Africa Cup of Nations before being stripped of the title. However, France will still be expecting to triumph tonight and be major contenders to win the tournament given they have reached the last two finals, defeating Croatia to lift the trophy in 2018 and losing out to Argentina on penalties four years ago. Their squad boasts the talents of the likes of Ballon d'or winner Ousmane Dembélé, and Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final.
