The planned 'Harry Potter' TV series probably won't feature an older version of Ron Weasley, according to the actor who played him for a decade.
Alas, it looks like Rupert Grint has confirmed he will not be part of HBO Max's 'Harry Potter' TV series, which is in its very early stages of development at the production company.
Grint played one of the three main series of the series, Ron Weasley, for the eight 'Harry Potter' movies over its 10-year run from 2001 to 2010. Often seen as the comedic relief of the fantasy series, the character eventually went on to have a family with Hermoine Granger, played by Emma Watson.
With recent rumblings of a planned 'HP' reboot series in the works for new streamer HBO Max, Grint has made it clear that no, he probably won't be returning to the character for it. Nor would he like the character to be recast for the series.
Speaking to Variety, Grint said that he feels "quite protective" of the character Ron Weasley, and hopes that the character won't end up being recast. He said: "It’ll be weird if it was a continuation kind of thing.
"I weirdly feel quite protective of that character. Even when I saw the stage shows, it was a very strange experience. If it’s like a different group of friends, I guess it would be interesting."
The premise is not yet known for the planned TV series based on one of the biggest fantasy franchises ever. However, the thought of the characters we all know and love - such as Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, and Dolores Umbridge - being recast does make us feel a little uncomfortable. We reckon the series will either take place before the events of the 'Harry Potter' franchise, or afterwards (with Neville Longbottom reprising his role, now as a Hogwarts professor).
Rupert Grint said that he plans to stay in acting for now, with the thought of directing someday not appealing to him. He joked: "I’m not very good at making decisions. Even ordering take-out, it really stresses me out. I’ve thought about it. I like the idea of creating, but I don’t know. Probably more producing."
Grint currently stars in M. Night Shyamalan's Apple TV+ thriller series 'Servant'. Season two premiered in January 2021, and will be back for a third season in the future.
