Believe it or not, this isn't the first time 'The Shining' has made its way to TV.
In the '90s, there was a miniseries adaptation that Stephen King wrote, as he famously hated Stanley Kubrick's adaptation that we all know and love. Needless to say, the TV miniseries was crap, but this particular idea sounds promising.
It's been reported that JJ Abrams' production house, Bad Robot, is set to begin work on a series based on the Overlook Hotel, the setting for 'The Shining' and 'Doctor Sleep' for HBO's streaming service, HBO Max.
A prequel movie had been in the works for some years, focused on the construction of the Overlook Hotel, with Mark Romanek involved as writer and director. However, it's likely that that's now on the backburner as 'Overlook' is moving forward.
It's early days yet, and no casting or airdate has been announced, but given how successful 'Castle Rock' has been, this could be exciting. For one, JJ Abrams and Bad Robot are involved in 'Castle Rock' and it's been great, and not only that, you get the sense that there's a lot of potential for some really intriguing stuff when it comes to the Overlook Hotel.
HBO Max is not yet available in Ireland and the UK, but expect this to feature on Sky Atlantic when it arrives.
