Whether we like it or not, water charges are coming our way, and it turns out that they're not going to be all that cheap either.

Irish Water has already seen its fair share of problems and bad press before they even get going, and the latest figures revealed are unlikely to do them any favours either.

According to The Irish Examiner, if you have to call out an engineer due to there being a problem with the meter on your property somewhere along the line, then you could be forced to fork over as much as €188 an hour for them to fix it.

That's the standard rate, but if you have to call outside the usual hours for some form of emergency, then you can slap nearly an extra hundred euro on top for your trouble, with €282 being the figure touted for that service. This won't make pleasant reading for most, as it seems that any problems with the water pressure and pipes rotting or leaking is the responsibility of the owner of the house and not Irish Water, so you'll have to hand over the dosh. Add that to the average fee that houses are expected to pay for water (€278 per annum) and it might be time to start tightening the belt even further.
