A British woman who suffered severe headaches and shooting pains down one side of her face following a trip to Peru was found to have flesh-eating maggots living in her ear. Rochelle Harris had recently been to South America and says she remembered walking through a swarm of flies and that one had gotten in her ear but she quickly got rid of it, but apparently not quick enough.

After she got home and started feeling the aforementioned symptoms, Harris began hearing scratching sounds in her head and found her pillow soaked in fluid when she woke up the following morning. When she was examined in the hospital, an ENT specialist found a small hole in her ear canal and then discovered the maggots. Understandably, at this point Rochelle burst into tears.

Examinations showed no serious damage apart from a 12mm hole the maggots had chewed in her ear canal, and after attempts to drown the maggots with olive oil failed, medics managed to remove two but then found eight more. Harris is not expected to suffer any long term consequences from the incident.

We however feel the need to shower immediately and wear ear muffs for the rest of our lives.
