The Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted last April for the first time since 1972, and it came as a surprise to many, but luckily one film crew just happened to be on hand to capture some footage.

Martin Heck and his team at Timestorm had been on the nearby Osorno volcano and were heading back, having captured the footage they needed. That's when they noticed the eruption, about 20km away, of Calbuco, and headed straight for the nearest clearing.

They set up all the equipment they had to hand and began capturing the footage in glorious 4K detail, and put together this stunning timelapse of the event which they just uploaded two days ago. The resulting footage is an amazing sight to behold, and a reminder of the sheer power of nature.
