There are plenty of smartwatches coming into the market lately, like Apple's version or the various Samsung versions, but this innovative project is one that doesn't need your smartphone to work.

The Flyshark smartwatch isn't positioning itself a s a product that you can use in conjunction with your smartphone or as an accessory for it, rather they're aiming to become a competitor for smartphones instead, and the device is designed to work without the need for your phone to get involved at all.

The Flyshark is compatible with both iOS and Android, and will be able to do a lot of the things that your smartphone can, from sending and receiving texts to making calls, and will have "a heart rate monitor, exercise tracker, sleep quality monitor and so much more". You can either pop a micro-sim in to the device itself, or pair it with your smartphone.

It's also pretty stylish in comparison to some of the more "futuristic" designs we've seen in the past, which is something that may have helped it reach its Kickstarter goal so quickly. Their original idea was to get $10,000 for the manufacture of the watch, they've managed to raise over $26,000 (at time of writing) for the project, and will start shipping to their early backers in April.

Although you might have missed the boat to get involved early doors, the device is due to go on sale later this year for $79 (about €70) which is still very reasonable. There's plenty more info on the Kickstarter page, including demos of the watch in action making calls and sending messages.
