Behold the 2017, J.J. Abrams-directed reboot of 'Football in the Groin', 'Tennis Ball to the Crotch'.

Everything is more intense Down Under and that apparently includes tennis, if this scene from the Australian Open is anything to go by.

This first round game between Stanislas Wawrinka and Martin Klizan nearly ended in tears after Wawrinka accidentally smashed a ball directly into his opponent's groin in the final set of the game.

Wawrinka, who immediately jumped the net to apologise to Klizan, went on to win the game, and apologised once again to media after the match.

"That was, for sure, a tough shot for him. The thing is there are some players they fake you, and you stop playing and then they just put up the racquet," Wawrinka told SMH.

"So for me I already miss some easy ones. For me the most important thing was to run straight over to him. I just wanted to make sure he was OK. I realised he was OK. I'm sorry I touched him in the wrong place. But I think it was OK at the end," he said.

New balls, please...
