Using a model and a hidden camera, the New Zealand Herald tried their own version of the catcalling video that went viral last week.

And would you believe that Kiwi men are a bit less loudmouthed than your average New Yorker? Who woulda thunk it? Anyway, with the popularity of that video so recently, it's possibly no surprise that this wouldn't be quite as prevalent as it was in the original, which saw actress Shoshana B. Roberts record her walking on the streets of New York for 10 hours, and she was endlessly harassed.

The original footage captured Shoshana getting catcalled 108 times, but in this version in Auckland, model Nicole Simpson doesn't get quite as much attention, although she is actually stopped on the street and gets a few looks.

The important point, of course, is that it's all about context. In New Zealand, it's clearly not socially appropriate to stop a woman on the street or shout things at her, and perhaps the original raises more points about a larger problem with attitudes to women in New York that can't be used to generalise about men all over the world.
