The residents of New Zealand's North Island were roused by a rare sighting on Wednesday night as a meteor passed over the region, lighting up the sky and creating a sonic boom that was heard for miles.

Josh Sherbourne, who handily has a dash cam in his car, was on his way to the gym in Tauranga when he accidentally caught footage of the meteor entered the atmosphere and burning up spectacularly. People from Tauranga, Matata, Wellington, Auckland, Whitianga and other places on the North Island also reported sightings, with some slight panic occurring until the Auckland Civil Defence & Emergency Management services reported that there was nothing to worry about.
