Violence and football seem to be connected in many places and clubs around the world, but there is a real desire to finally act and stamp it out of the game.
Clearly Sport Clube do Recife are hoping that they can curb the number of incidents at their games, and have come up with a novel way to deal with the problem: they've hired more security.
But these aren't just any regular security guards, these are the mothers of the hooligans themselves, who are watching over their sons at the match from within the crowd. The 30 new security guards received training for their task from military poilice, and were in place for the recent derby game against Nautico, where there were some great images of the sons and mothers sharing the joy of watching football together.
Aricio Fortes, the vice president of Ogilvy Brazil, the PR company that came up with the idea, said that the plan "was to make the most fanatical supporters aware and help in some way to bring peace to stadiums. At the end of the day, no one wants to fight in front of a mother, especially his own". The scheme seemed to work too, as Sport won the game 1-0, and the club reported that there were no arrests made at the match.
