David Villa is Spain's leading goalscorer of all time, and when he was subbed off in his final game this evening, the emotion was a bit too much.

Having given Spain the lead and just their second goal of the competition with a fine backheel flick, David Villa could have been forgiven for thinking that, having had to watch from the bench for the last two games, he might get the full 90 this afternoon in Brazil.

However, it wasn't to be as coach Vicente Del Bosque called him aside in the second half, and Villa was overcome by emotion as he returned to the bench.

A heartbreaking end to a glittering career for the Spain international and former Real Zaragoza great, his exploits with la roja won't be forgotten any time soon.
