Emotions were running high last night as Barack Obama delivered his final presidential address.

The moment that sent most supporters, particularly their daughter, Malia, over the edge was when he paid tribute to his wife Michelle and the job she did as First Lady.

"For the past twenty five years you have not only been my wife and the mother of my children, you have been my best friend." Obama began.

Fighting back the tears, he went on to acknowledge that Michelle had taken "on a role you didn’t ask for, and you made it your own, with grace and with grit and with style and good humour,”

Obama's tribute to his wife might not be as universally loved as Ryan Gosling's was for example, but it is touching and lovely a note for him to wrap up his address on.
