Did you or did someone you know sit Honours Maths in the Leaving Cert? They may have gotten away with one of the easiest papers on record.

That's according to Dr. Eugene Gath of University of Limerick who, in a scathing report on the state of mathematics in Irish academia, branded this year's Honours Maths Paper 1 as "the easiest on record."

Dr. Gath, who has taught Mathematics and Financial Mathematics at UL since 1990, says that today's paper lacked " the quality and substance that students embarking on a college education deserve."

He also compared the paper to ordinary papers of old, saying that knowledge of actual maths at a high level has plummeted.

Despite this, however, Dr. Gath believes that the ordinary paper was completely out of balance, calling it "egregious" and "an impossible paper."

Dr. Gath isn't alone in complaining about Leaving Cert being dumbed down. Many have felt that previous Leaving Certs have been getting progressively easier in order to accommodate demands for college places in science and maths.
