A new survey, conducted by the Irish Times, has shown a number of revealing facts for Irish men and women in Ireland.

The survey quizzed over 12,000 participants from all ages and sexual preferences, with questions varying from use of the Internet to find casual sexual partners - 13% of all participants - to whether or not they've masturbated on camera to a partner - 73% claiming they haven't.

In particular, the survey showed that almost all participants have had at least one casual one-night stand. 44% of women who responded they've had less than five one night stands, compared to 39% for men.

However, 32% of Irish women claim they've never partook in one. That's compared to 25% of Irish men who have never had a one-night stand.

The figures for men are quite markedly different. 12% of all men who responded claim to have had more than 20 one night stands, compared to just 4% for women.

As for using apps and websites for casual encounters, experts urge caution. Teresa Bergin, a psychosexual therapist, believes that apps such as Tinder aren't conducive to long-term relationships - if that's what you're looking for.

"One-night stands seem to have replaced the older version of necking or heavy petting with someone. Most people seem to understand that it is what it is, and that no more is expected," said Trish Murphy, a psychotherapist with the Irish Times.

Bergin adds, "In a way, there is nothing radically different from using an app to meet up with someone or have a one-night stand than encountering them in a pub or nightclub. Attraction occurs initially by seeing the person and develops (or not) later through getting to know them."

So, all the data aside - does it stack up in real life? Have you more than five one-night stands? More than twenty?
