Tech giant Apple has recently registered several vehicle-related generic web domains, fuelling speculation that it could be planning to launch an auto business.

Apple-focused site MacRumors has reported that Apple had registered apple.car, apple.cars, and apple.auto. The three domains were registered by the company in December and are recorded on whois.domaintools.com.

It's still unclear why Apple did this but there main working theory from commentators is that they have plans to get in on the electric car market and even autonomous (self driving) vehicles.

Google, who have always been quite open about their plans for the autonomous vehicle industry have also registered domain names in the past week. Google.car and google.auto were both registered on January 7th.
