Sony have revealed Playstation 4's new Virtual Reality headset to the world at the Game Developers Conference 2014, San Fransisco.

Project Morpheus, as it is called, is the culmination of 3 years of work by Sony to produce a virtual reality system compatible with its console.

The prototype features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view providing a complete immersive experience for the user.

Shu Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios, explains how the headset works: (Via: Sony)

'Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation.'

In addtion to Playstation Camera, the new VR headset will also be compatible with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move allowing for an easy to use, plug and play virtual reality experience.

"This prototype is by no means final" says Yoshida, but the current Project Morpheus prototype will certainly provide PS4 developers with a platform to build upon.

The lucky attendees at the GDC this week, will be able take Project Morpheus for a spin at the SCEA booth through a handful of technology demos.

So, yeah, virtual reality is here. Cancel all your plans, lads, real life just got less interesting.
