Kevin Vickers, the man who gunned down the shooter in the attack in Ottawa a few months ago, has been named as the next ambassador to Ireland.

Vickers became known worldwide in October after he took down the gunman on Parliament Hill who shot and killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and was storming the Houses of Commons, and his next step will be to land on Irish soil as the ambassador.

He will replace Loyola Hearn, who has been in the role since 2011, and has a long career in security and police work behind him, including rising to the senior ranks of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Since the attacks in October, Vickers has received several notable honours from the Canadian government, including this latest one being named as ambassador, while the Israeli parliament also honoured him in November. He was greeted with a standing ovation from the MPs when the parliament resumed sitting the following day.
