Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy. Said boy will be King once Liz, Charles and William pop their clogs. Barring any extreme circumstances, the majority of people alive today are never going to witness this because we'll all be too old and probably in the grave by the time young Prince whatever takes the throne. Yay time/death.

Meanwhile, should you want to know every little thing that has happened since, here's a catchup for you.

Kate gave birth to the couple's first child at 16:24pm BST yesterday,  which Kensington Palace confirmed in a statement. Prince William was in attendance for the birth, which occurred in the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London. The newborn weighed 8lbs, 6oz, and mother and baby were said to be doing well and remained in hospital overnight.

Both the royal family and the duchess' family have been informed of the news and all are said to be delighted.

Here's how the British papers are dealing with the news today.

Prince William called Queen Elizabeth, his father Prince Charles, and brother Prince Harry to tell them the news prior to the announcement being made via an official press release. An easel announcing the royal birth was also placed on the grounds of Buckingham Palace, as is royal custom.

Prince Charles released an official statement, saying: 'Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.

'Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.'

William made a short statement saying 'We could not be happier', which is all you could expect from a bewildered new dad, while world leaders such as David Cameron and Barack Obama sent their congratulations.

The royal couple apparently then celebrated with pizza (because even royal hospital food is muck?) as London's heatwave ended with thunderstorms, lightning and hail erupted through the night following the breaking of the news. Ominous, foreshadowing or coincidental? Who knows.
