We know this shouldn't be news - that a woman announcing her sexuality to the world shouldn't be classed as 'breaking' or anything of the sort.

But, still, it's wonderful to see - finally - a gay Rose of Tralee.

In an interview with The Sun, Philadelphia Rose Maria Walsh announced that she's gay, stating "I'm confident in who I am as a person."

She went on, saying that "to me, being gay is normal. I told my parents and they were supportive as I knew they would be."

Anthony O'Gara, the executive chairman of the event, has said that Maria's sexuality will "create some interest" in the event, but hopes it will all be positive.

Well done, Maria Walsh. Good for you.
