The British Open is just around the corner, but judging by his latest Instagram post, Rory McIlroy probably won't be attending.

The world number one posted a picture of him in a boot cast and on crutches to his Instagram, saying that he picked up a nasty injury playing football, saying that they were still assessing the state of the injury and the recovery schedule.

McIlroy said that it was a "total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout" on the weekend and that they were "continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can".

However, it looks extremely unlikely that he will have any part to play in the British Open as a result of this injury, and it may be quite a while before he's back on the golf course, putting much of the rest of his season in jeopardy.
