The next US presidential election is more than a year away, but the race for the Republican nomination is already underway - and you can expect to hear the name Ron DeSantis a lot over the coming months.

DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, is going head-to-head with Donald Trump and other candidates in a race to the White House and he has already attracted attention for his controversial anti-LGBTQ stance.

Now, he has attracted the ire of Cillian Murphy and his 'Peaky Blinders' cohorts for using clips of Murphy's character Tommy Shelby in a new campaign video that mock's Trump's pro-LGBTQ viewpoint and highlights the policy attacks that DeSantis has made against the community.

Other film and TV characters, including Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in 'American Psycho' and Brad Pitt in 'Troy', are also featured - but the 'Peaky Blinders' team have released a statement condemning DeSantis.

"On behalf of the partners of Peaky Blinders – Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions and Baniay Rights – we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron DeSantis’ campaign was obtained without permission of official license," it read. "We do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner."

It's a tactic that was used a lot by Trump himself - using songs and clips from famous TV shows during his campaign, regardless of whether he had permission or not - so you can expect to see a lot more of this over the next year.
