Starting from today, you will now be charged the same amount for a phone call at home as you will abroad.

The abolition of roaming charges has long been debated and called for, but now it's finally a reality as of today. The European Parliament ratified the ban earlier today, however they won't come into effect until June 2017.

As part of bridging the gap between now and then, a cap has been placed on roaming charges that will come into effect on April of next year. Roaming charges will not exceed 5c per minute for voice calls, 2c for text messages and 5c per MB of data under the cap.

The new laws also cover for barriers to Internet speed, with start-up companies able to access Internet providers' services without risk of losing speed.
