Minister Pascal Donohoe is looking for more areas around the country that can be changed to a 30 km/h speed limit.
The move comes in an effort to help decrease the number of deaths on our roads and to protect the most vulnerable road users, as the Minister asked local authorities to identify any areas where they thought lowering the limit would be of benefit.
Most areas outside Dublin do not use the lower limit of 30km/h, and Donohue has asked that residential areas in particular be considered. While the new limits would not be enforced with speed cameras, the authorities would be allowed to use ramps to slow traffic, as well as speed limit signs, with the the Minister adding "I would expect community gardaí and normal Garda patrols will play a role in monitoring these limits".
This news comes just a few days after Donohue announced that cyclists would be getting hit with fines in the coming weeks, a move that had been proposed quite a while back but had been delayed until now.
