As we've pointed out many times in the past, it's human nature to want to know that happened - for all the difference it makes... Rik Mayall's wife of 30 years, Barbara Robbin, who has yet to find out what caused her husband's sudden death yesterday morning.

Speaking with reporters assembled outside their home in West London last night, the make up artist said: "We don't know yet what happened. He had a strong heart, so I don't think it was a heart attack. But we just don't know until the coroner's report. Maybe he had a fit, maybe it was his heart. We just don't know."

A spokesperson with Scotland Yard yesterday stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the comedian's death.

Celebrities and fans alike have been leaving tributes on Twitter. Adrian Edmondson's is obviously the most fitting.

"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."

Rik Mayall has passed away aged 56
