If you're in the market to buy a new phone, Sony have just released a new mid-range smartphone that aims to please the majority.

To look at it's exactly what you'd expect from Sony, with the classic square design at 5.5inches. If you're not used to smartphones it might feel a little big and awkward for one handed use, but it's not too heavy. The touchscreen responds well and apps were quick open with no issues, this is perfect for your average social media user.

With a 13MP front facing camera – great quality for a mid range phone - it takes good photos. Daylight is where you'll get the clearest outcomes and it's pretty decent inside. The 5MP front facing camera is a bit lacking if you're after those precious selfies, but that's what you get for this price range.

The battery is good, you often find yourself choosing between a phone with loads of features or a decent battery life so this is a nice balance. Saying that I wasn't going too app heavy, but it was a promising start. In my experience Sony phones are made to last, whether it be a high end or budget, so you shouldn't be looking for a replacement a few months down the line.

The speaker is a bit disappointing, located at the bottom of the phone the music sounds pitchy and just not that great. Obviously if you're plugging in your headphones this isn't an issue, but something to consider.

This is a serious contender if you're after a mid-range phone, the camera is of standout quality and it's a good all-rounder. While it's not miles ahead of its competitors (the mid-range Samsung J5 has the same camera specs and 16GB memory), this is a safe buy if you're after a certain quality across the board.

The Sony Xperia L1 is now available on eir and Meteor. Pre-pay from €159.99 and from free on bill-pay. It will become available from Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile and Carphone Warehouse in the coming weeks.
