Pope Francis has been one of the most progressive leaders of the Catholic Church in recent years.

As well as opening an official Twitter account, the Pope is now moving towards another social media platform: Instagram. The Pope's username on Instagram, franciscus, went live in the past few minutes and his first post was... well, not a selfie - more of a professional photo.

Pope Francis opted not to join Facebook in 2014, saying that he feared what people might post on his page. Also, Facebook's got that whole algorithm thing meaning nobody's really sure what you're seeing. As for joining Instagram, it's hoped Pope Francis will be able to communicate with his followers on the photo-sharing site.

It's not yet known if Pope Francis will be using copious amounts of filters or if he's on #TeamFollowBack, or if he's joining YikYak and Periscope.
