It may be a cliché but it’s so true – a picture paints a thousand words.

Taken over the weekend, the photo portrays a twelve year old boy walking defiantly with his arms wide open before a group of 11,000 protesters as they march in protest against same-sex marriage through Celaya in Mexico.

The protest was organised by the National Front for the Family and was held in opposition to proposals by President Enrique Pena Nieto to introduce same-sex marriage.

The photo was taken by journalist Manuel Rodriguez who told Regeneración that at first he thought the child was only playing but later learned that he has an ‘uncle who is gay’ and he ‘hates that people hate.’

“Tengo un tío que es gay y no me gusta que lo odien”, dijo el niño de aproximadamente 12 años www.regeneracion.mx

The boy has since been compared to the infamous Tank Man, the single unknown protestor who stood in the path of numerous tanks when they attempted to suppress activists at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

It’s a powerful message from a child.
