Despite an improvement in the economy and a slight fall in the numbers of people emigrating, it seems that plenty of people are still leaving Ireland for new shores.

New figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that 81,900 people have left Ireland in the last 12 months up to April, meaning that one person has left every 13 minutes.

According to Newstalk, that figure is down from 89,000 last year, but immigration to Ireland has actually increased in the period, reaching around 60,600 in the same number of months. It seems, however, that many of those returning were Irish, with 11,600 coming home.

While the UK and Australia remain the most popular places for us Irish to emigrate to, the new figures show that there has been one other, final change, and that is the fact that women are now more likely to leave than men.
