New CSO data has revealed the county with the highest mortality rate, as well as the county with the lowest.

Good news if you live in Kildare, as new data from the Central Statistics Office has shown that it is the county with the lowest mortality rate, at 440 deaths per 100,000. This made it the healthiest county in the country, with lung cancer being found to be the most common cause of death there.

The data from the CSO dates back to 2012, and according to the figures, Mayo is the county with the highest mortality rate in the country with 843 deaths per 100,000. In second place was Kerry, where the rate is 783 deaths per 100,000.

In further bad news for Mayo, it seems that people there are more likely to die from a heart attack, coronary heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease than elsewhere in the country. Speaking to The Irish Mirror, Medical Director of the Irish Heart Foundation, Dr Angie Brown, said that "it is well known by medical professionals that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in Ireland".

However, it wasn't all bad news, as she added that "coronary disease can be treated more easily now than in the past" and that "the good news is that 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable, which reaffirms the need for increased awareness of heart disease and stroke prevention and symptoms. Prevention is crucial and we strongly advocate healthier lifestyles and a less toxic environment."

Alzheimer’s disease, colon cancer, stroke and breast cancer were also cited as some of the other leading causes of death in the country, while in Longford, more people died from pneumonia than any other disease.
