Michael Fassbender took part in the Porsche Supercup Austrian Grand Prix last weekend to everyone's surprise.

Fans of the Irish actor may not know that he has expressed an interest in motorsport for years. Michael Fassbender is a big fan of Formula One and of Scuderia Ferrari.

He first raced in the Ferrari Challenge's Coppa Shell class in May 2017.

In 2018, he ran the full Ferrari Challenge North America schedule, and even won the season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

Michael Fassbender moved to Porsche in 2019. He joined Proton Competition for the full 2020 European Le Mans Series the following year.

Speaking before his latest race (via The Sun), the actor said: "To tackle a one-make series like the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is always a challenge. The competition is stiff.

"All the drivers are fast, they know the car inside out and can get the best out of it. So, I’m here to learn.

"Surprisingly, the Supercup drivers are really open to helping."

After the race, in which the 'X-Men' star drove a car numbered 911, he spoke about being happy to beat his fellow special guest driver.

He said: "My goal was to finish ahead of Georgios Frangulis, the second gentleman guest driver this weekend. I’m happy, that I managed to do so."

Michael Fassbender currently ranks 7th in the Proton Competition of the Complete European Le Mans Series. The season is still in progress.
