The outlook for the next few days is for extremely cold weather and generally unpleasant conditions this evening and across the weekend.

The cold snap that we've been experiencing over the past few days looks set to continue overnight, as Met Éireann are warning of "outbreaks of rain and sleet, turning to snow in places" today, while widespread frost has made for some hazardous road conditions this morning.

Western areas have been hit the worst by these conditions, and there looks to be no let up in store today as west Ulster, Connacht and Munster will also be hit by scattered thunderstorms as the day goes on. Some areas will get sunny spells as the day develops, but tonight things look to set get worse as we head in to tonight.

They're predicting "bitterly cold conditions" tonight along with "scattered showers of sleet and snow". Those showers will hit the Atlantic coast and Ulster first, before becoming more widespread, and most of the country will have to deal with frost overnight too, with icy stretches developing on the roads.

Moving in to next week, the cold snap is predicted to continue until at least Wednesday, and Saturday looking to be the worst of the lot, as temperatures overnight will drop to -6°C or -7°C. They're also warning that freezing fog and hail will hit many areas in the country, as conditions worsen for the next few days.
