The fake kidnapping plot of a man in Mexico was discovered recently, leading to him not getting the whopping €412 that he had hoped for out of the situation.

Eliot Garrido Guido, from Mexico City, really wanted to get his hands on some extra money recently, so he hatched a truly terrible scam using the help of his friend Carlos Amilcar Martinez Reyes. We don't know exactly what he had planned for the money, but we hope it was better than the plan he had for how to kidnap himself.

Eliot is an unemployed builder who lost his job three months ago and whose wife worked in a bank, so instead of asking her for some extra money so that he could do whatever it was that he was up to, he got Reyes to take him to a derelict house, tie him up and gag him, and then take pictures as "proof" to send to his partner.

According to what his wife told The Daily Mail, she got the pictures and a message saying the the kidnappers wanted 7,000 Pesos (€412), and that they were torturing her husband. All good so far, but they hit a snag when they told her that they had taken him to Playa del Carmen, over 1,500 kilometres away.

"They said they would kill him if I didn't pay up. I was seriously worried but when I contacted them they said I should leave the money at an address in Mexico City. I asked them why I should do that if they were in Playa del Carmen, and they just said do it. But it didn't make sense so I contacted the police."

Without too much effort, the police were able to sniff out that it was a fake kidnap plot, because they saw that they hadn't turned off the location settings on the message that they had sent, and then they found them in a house about 300 feet away. Come on Eliot, you gotta go further than 300 feet, even we know that.

Anyway, the police believe that he was annoyed that his wife earned more money than him and as a result decided to extort the money out of her instead. They both confessed, and are now looking at a possible five years in jail.
