Ten years ago, Kylie's bottom was a revelation. It was revered. Most of all, it was cheerful. It was spinning around and generally just happy to be out despite suffering a spot of 'quadrabum' due to the tight fitting nature of those gold pants.

Now it's being dragged across some kind of netting and paraded about in order to - according to fans - market "mediocre" music. They may have a point... I had to watch Sexercise a number of times yesterday (research purposes) and, by the end of it, my brain was replaying her fornicating with a gym horse to Spinning Around. Why? Because it's a much better pop song. Sexercise sounds like a rejected Britney B-side.

So what have the fans been saying? Firstly, most appear to be female. Hardly surprising. Many moons ago, the first time we posted a photo of David Beckham being barely constrained by his manties, we got a fairly verbose complaint. My first response was "Bet that was a man." Turns out it was. We don't appreciate it when our own gender attempts to set a ridiculously lofty bar when it comes to what the opposite sex may perceive to be the naked 'norm'.

Some of the YouTube comments under Kylie's latest video go as follows: "When I see 20-year-olds doing this I am less shocked because I assume their brain is still growing. When I see a woman over 40 doing this I think stupid silly woman never learned a thing."

By way of response, someone added: "So she's 45 now and still hot as hell. does she just piss off like 90% of the rest of the women in the world for basically proving they're full of sh*t that they can't be hot(as in "for real" hot, just just placating them to boost their self-esteem and shut them up) when they get older?"

@PoptonesMe said: "Love you Kylie, but this is not an example of why. I like the modern sound but hate the lyrics and the video together just have none of the fun of other "sexy" videos like 2 hearts, Can't get you out of my head, chocolate, Love at first sight... I look forward to every new video and album. Hopefully the next one will recapture the fun and, dare I say, innocence..." She's 45, mate. If she tried to play the innocent it'd come across a bit creepy at this point. Hence why Madonna can only sing Like a Virgin this way now.

As for those on Twitter, one said: "Kylie Minogue’s new video is basically soft porn. Is the only way to sell a record these days through being as risque as possible?" Nope, just ask Adele.

According to The Daily Mail, Vivienne Pattinson of campaign group Mediawatch-UK said: "It’s just reinforcing the idea that your worth is defined by your hotness rather than anything else you have to offer, and that can be really damaging for the self-esteem of young girls." while Pippa Smith, of Safermedia, added: "This latest release is very disappointing as she will understand perfectly well that she is a role model for young girls and children."

Like it or not, Kylie's Sexercise is the celebrity equivalent of some middleaged gyrating on stage down the local on karaoke night, roaring "I'VE STILL GOT IT, YOU BASTARDS!" But, in her defense, she has got a lovely bottom for a 45-year-old... but is that all there is?

It's time to try a different tack. Otherwise, this is her fate. And that looks really f*cking exhausting.
