Nudist-friendly beaches are reasonably common on the continent, but they're not all that plentiful beyond to the likes of the United Kingdom or Ireland - until now.
Hawk Cliff, which is just around Dalkey, will be home to Ireland's first nudist-friendly beach following a decision made by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to erect (heh) signs warning people of possible nudity. In an interview with The Sun, the head of the Irish Naturist Association (yes, there is one) Pat Gallagher welcomed the move by the council - but stressed that the council wasn't authorising a naturist or nude beach.
"They are simply putting a sign up that will indicate nude bathers may be using this area. It will more than likely say something like ‘nude bathers may be seen beyond this point’. So for someone reading that, if for any reason they are in fear or distress, at least they will have notification that there may be nude bathers. It gives us reassurance that we are not going to offend anybody."
According to the Irish Naturist Association and Pat Gallagher, they've approached "several local authorities with the idea that they put signage on areas that are well used to indicate that nude bathers may be seen," but Dalkey will be the first to do so.
