Yesterday (July 1st), CNN incorrectly reported that singer Gotye had committed suicide. Apparently, according to Sky News, it was all the rumours circulating on social media outlet Twitter that lead to their publishing of said rumours as plain fact.

Reporting what they did not realise was a massively false claim, CNN said: "At 4:32 AM EST, it was reported that Gotye had shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun... He was pronounced dead at 4.45AM, and the investigation concluded that the cause of death was suicide."

In response to this, Gotye himself got straight on to Twitter to joke about their announcement. "I'm not dead. #Pinkalbumtitles."

Rather than go all serious and angry, as you'd imagine Gotye and his pals had every right to do so, his bandmate also joked on Twitter: "It saddens me to confirm the news of @gotye's passing- he suffered cardiac arrest while flying a unicorn over a double rainbow... Ghost of @gotye just appeared and together we banged out a script for the pilot episode of quirky new sitcom GHOSTYE."

Meanwhile upon hearing the news our own music editor John Balfe said: "Well they didn't have to stoop so low." Then he said sorry.

CNN have sinced removed their error.

Well that's someone's investigative journalism job gone down the swanny. Poor pet.
