Rob Ford, the controversial former Mayor of Toronto has died aged 46.

He had been battling with a rare form of cancer called pleomorphic liposarcoma for the past 18 months. Ford proved to be a very divisive figure amongst Toronto's electorate but won many admirers with his everyman persona and budget slashing agenda. He became a cultural phenomenon in 2013 after a video leaked online of him appearing to be smoking crack cocaine. He was then lampooned by Late Night Talk Show hosts in the US such as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Despite the very public battle with substance abuse, he held on to his role as Mayor. It wasn't until his illness first surfaced during re-election in 2014 that he was forced to bow out.
